What You Need To Know About Eye Allergies

What You Need To Know About Eye Allergy Season

Allergies are an unfortunate part of life for many people. For those who suffer from eye allergies, it’s particularly troublesome because symptoms can interfere with daily life when they cause blurred vision and swelling of the eyes. Fortunately, there is a relief.

What Causes Eye Allergies?

There are two types of allergies, seasonal and perennial. Seasonal allergies are most often caused by pollens, grasses, trees, and flowers that irritate and cause a reaction. These allergies are only present for part of the year. Perennial allergies occur year-round and are more often caused by irritants such as mold, cigarette smoke, pet dander and other environmental problems.

What Can You Do To Prevent Eye Allergies

The first line of defense is to try to minimize exposure to the allergens. For example, avoid cigarette smoke or any fabrics, chemicals or other problems that may be causing the reaction. Many people are allergic to dust mites, so keeping your home vacuumed, dusted and investing in an air filtration system is a good idea. If you have pets the best thing you can do is to keep them groomed and bathed and wash your hands after petting them. Try to avoid going outdoors during the height of allergy season at least during peak times of the day or when it is breezy outside. You won’t be able to avoid it all together, but limit it and wear sunglasses to keep pollen from getting into your eyes.

Eye Allergy Relief And Allergy Eye Drops

Medications are helpful when dealing with severe allergies. There are several over the counter medications including allergy eye drops that may work for you. Be sure to read the packaging as some brands may leave you feeling sleepy. Allergy eye drops can help symptoms and be soothing to itchy eyes.
