UV Safety Month

September means kids beginning school, great weather, and UV safety month! At Lone Star Vision, we know that you want to spend more time outside in the great weather. That means your eyes will be exposed to more UV rays, which can cause a wide variety of damaging symptoms. It’s always important to keep your eyes protected from damaging UVA and UVB rays. Our doctors of optometry recommend protecting your eyes every time you leave the house.

Optometrist Talks About UV Eye Protection

UV rays can cause damage to your eyes, from dry and watery eyes to cataracts. Our optometrist team recommends that you wear UV protection every time you leave the house. Here are some good methods for keeping your eyes safe and comfortable in the sun:

Pick your sunglasses carefully. Always choose glasses that block 100 percent of the UVA and UVB rays.

Choose wraparound sunglasses to prevent the sun’s rays from coming in from the side.

Wear a hat with a wide brim for extra protection.

Wear your sunglasses on cloudy days. UV rays can pass right through clouds to do damage to your eyesight.

Stay inside between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sunlight is the strongest. If you can’t avoid going out during those hours, make doubly sure you wear as much UV protection as possible.

Even with your best efforts, your eyes may be damaged by being exposed to too many UV rays. If your eyes are constantly watering and scratchy, or you’re having a hard time seeing as clearly as you used to, call our office in Plano at 972-378-4104, or in Celina at 972-382-2020. Most sun-related eye problems are temporary and can be treated in our office, but they’re likely to get worse if you leave them alone and add more exposure every day.

Protecting your eyes from UVA and UVB rays is important for the whole family. What’s your favorite tip for keeping kids eyes away from the sun during these bright sunny days?
