Our Optometrists in Plano and Celina see many patients around Halloween suffering eye irritation, infection or a cornea scratch due to wearing Halloween makeup and/or decorative lenses. All costume makeup contains artificial oils, fragrances and dyes that can cause major skin breakouts and eye infections. In addition, Halloween makeup ingredients may contain color additives not approved by the FDA. As a result of wearing costume makeup and non-prescription contact lenses, you may be setting up your eyes for a necessary trip to your eye doctor for treatment.
Signs of a Scratched Cornea
Decorative contact lenses and makeup applicators may scratch your cornea and cause a corneal abrasion. Feeling like you have grit or sand in your eye, pain when opening or closing your eye, excessive tearing and blurry vision are symptoms of a scratched cornea requiring treatment from our Celina and Plano optometrists.
What is Conjunctivitis
The most common eye irritation caused by costume makeup is conjunctivitis, an eye infection potentially caused by applying eye makeup containing bacteria. Improperly contained or expired makeup may harbor bacteria, as well as makeup made with ingredients conducive to bacterial growth. Signs of conjunctivitis include redness, excessive tearing, yellow or green discharge and burning/itching eyes.
Halloween Makeup and Allergic Reactions
Symptoms of an allergic reaction to costume makeup resemble symptoms of a cornea scratch and conjunctivitis. What is the Difference Between Decorative/Colored Contact Lenses and Prescription Contact Lenses?
Be aware when considering wearing decorative lenses that the “one size fits all” adage does not apply to non-prescribed contact lenses. Improperly fitted contact lenses may scratch your cornea or even force blood vessels to invade your cornea and cause eye swelling. Our optometrists strongly urge the communities of Plano, Celina, Prosper, and Frisco to never purchase decorative contact lenses from retailers that do not require you to submit a prescription.
