Infant Eye Exam at Lone Star Vision, Eye Care & Optical

Protecting the Health of Your Baby's Eyes

How well is your baby seeing the world? It can be hard for parents to know whether their infants are exhibiting eye health, eye function or visual acuity problems.  At the same time, proper eye function at this stage is critical for a baby's learning and mental development. That's why our optometrists at Lone Star Vision in Plano, TX recommend pediatric eye exams for all children, including infants.  Our Doctors are partners with InfantSEE®, a public health program designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an essential part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Under this program, participating optometrists provide a comprehensive infant eye assessment between 6 and 12 months of age as a no-cost public service. Two babies getting eye exams in Plano, TX

One of the complicating factors in evaluating a baby's ocular wellbeing is the fact that infants simply cannot see perfectly for the first few months of life -- and this is normal. The eyes and the brain must learn how to work together, coordinating their functions so that the brain can interpret images and send the right motor signals to make the eyes focus on objects. By the age of 6 months, however, your baby should be able to see clearly, with good color perception, depth perception and eye muscle control. When your baby reaches this age, it's time to schedule his first eye exam.

How Our Optometrists Test Infant Eye's At Our Plano and Celina Eye Care Centers

An infant's eye exam is necessarily more limited in scope that of a toddler, if only because a toddler can obey instructions and verbalize sensations. But you might surprised at how much information we can get from an infant eye exam. For starters, we can use retinoscopy to look inside the eye for tumors, cataracts and other immediate threats to your child's ocular health. We can also test how well the pupil responds to light and examine the alignment of the eyes for signs of strabismus, a condition which can interfere with focusing ability. Exterior signs of possible health issues, such as a drooping eyelid or excessive tear production, may call for further evaluation.

As for eye function and clarity of vision, our optometrists can use a test called preferential looking to check visual acuity. An infant will normally choose to look at a striped card instead of a blank one if his eyes can view the stripes clearly; failure to do so may indicate a refractive error such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. We can also use "fixate and follow" testing to determine how well the eyes work together to fix on and follow a moving object.

Schedule a Pediatric Eye Exam With Our Optometry Team in Plano or Celina

Once your infant has received this all-important initial eye exam, the next eye exam will need to occur at the age of 4, when he or she is a toddler. At that point we can perform more detailed and interactive vision testing along while repeating the necessary eye health and function evaluations. Schedule an infant eye exam with our optometry team at 972-378-4104 so your child can take the first step toward a lifetime of optimal eyesight!
