Low Vision Eye Care With Our Plano And Celina Optometrists

Most people with visual acuity problems can have their eyesight corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or corrective surgery. For a small number of people, their vision has deteriorated past the point of correction. These patients aren't completely blind, because they have some visual ability left in their eyes. At Lone Star Vision, we treat patients with low vision by creating an environment where they can live their normal life by adapting parts of their environment.

The Different Types of Low Vision

This condition isn't the same for all patients. We see a wide variety of vision problems that can be classified as low vision, including:

  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Loss of central vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Night blindness
  • Hazy vision

Any accommodations needed for low vision treatment always depends on the type of vision problem you're experiencing.

Causes of Low Vision

The condition can be caused by a number of eye diseases or injuries. It's much more common in older people, for the most part. Contributing eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma are more common in people over 60, which makes it doubly likely they'll experience low vision. While it's connected with age many times, this condition can also be caused by diabetes, cancer of the eye, strokes, eye trauma, or brain injury.

Eye Care for Low Vision Patients

Depending on your low vision symptoms, our eye care specialists will develop a plan to help you live your life as normally as possible. If your low vision is caused by a condition such as diabetic retinopathy, surgical procedures may give you a lot of relief. If surgery isn't an option, your low vision condition will be permanent. But you can still function normally with the aid of many visual aids. Some of the ones our patients find helpful are:

  • Lenses that filter light
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Freestanding magnifiers
  • Telescoping glasses
  • Reading prisms

Other aids that aren't directly connected to your vision may be helpful, as well. We recommend trying a variety of helpful products, such as audiobooks, talking watches and clocks, text-reading software, and phones with large numbers and buttons.

How to Prevent Low Vision

In many cases, low vision is just a part of the aging process and can't be avoided. You can lower your chances of developing the condition by helping to prevent some of the diseases that can cause it. Protect your eyes from UV light and eat a healthy diet to keep your eyes in good health.
